Mecit Vural

Scientific Juror

Born in Bolu in 1948, Mecit Vural graduated from the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Science, Ankara University in 1973. After graduation, he began his academic career as an assistant at the same university and spent the majority of his 48-year academic life serving as a faculty member in the Department of Biology at Gazi University. Even after retiring in 2015, he continues his work in the field of botany.

He is particularly known for his extensive research on Turkey’s endemic plant species. His studies on the endemic plants of Ankara province have attracted attention, and his scientific work on the endemic plant of Ankara’s Gölbaşı district, "yanardöner" (Cyanus tchihatcheffii), led the efforts to ensure its protection. As a result of his initiatives, the species was placed under protection by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization.

Throughout his academic career, he has participated in numerous projects, supervised various theses, and authored many scientific publications. Additionally, through his books and articles on endemic plants, he has made significant contributions to the accumulation of knowledge in this field.

Besides his scientific research, he actively participates in seminars and symposiums and organizes educational activities to raise awareness of nature conservation and environmental protection. He is recognized as a leading authority in botany and nature conservation and continues to contribute to the preservation of Turkey’s biological diversity.

He serves as a Scientific Jury member for the Anatolian Plant Legacy Exhibition.
